Without a battery your car would go no where. The battery is what gets everything running in a car. The battery is also used to power other things such as the radio and other parts of the vehicle. Just like everything else in your car the battery does need to be check on occasionally. After many months of use it is faced with wear and tear. If a battery is properly taken care of it can have a long life and will last for years. Batteries need to always be cleaned and have lots of water in them. When checking your battery you should follow these steps:
Remove the caps and bars on the top of your battery. Some batteries are completely sealed so you cannot do this. Be very careful opening these caps, battery acid can remove paint from your car and if you get it on your skin or clothes they can be damaged if you do not wash it off immediately.
Look inside your battery. Once the caps are off look inside your battery. If you have one that is completely sealed than you cannot do this step.
Check the water level inside. If there is not a lot of fluid you should fill the battery with water until it is almost full.
Clean the battery. Before you do any cleaning you must remove the cables. You must always remove the cable from the negative side first, to do this look for the negative symbol. Also when attaching the cables you must put on the positive first. If you see deposits of gunk and powder clean it out with a cloth or something you don’t mind getting dirty. The powered substance that you see on the top of your battery is usually dried battery acid. Use baking soda and water along with a rough brush to really get a good cleaning.
Next you must dry everything off with a rag. Then place grease around the terminals to prevent the powder from forming again.
Following these steps every month should ensure a long battery life and save you a lot of money on replacement batteries.
